Astronauts are exposed to enormous levels of UV light in space without protection from the atmosphere. UV light at low levels gives us a sun-tan, but at high levels can cause sunburn or cancer as it damages our cells.

We have been testing how effective different materials are for blocking UV light for spacesuits and their visors. One team also investigated the potential for liquid layers of protection.

To do this we used beads that change to darker and darker colours depending on how much UV light they absorb. As we covered these beads with different materials, we discovered which we better for UV protection. Here are our investigations:
