Make a minute count

Below is a list of counting challenges and activities which you will be completing in Year 6. Can you try any of them at home?

Year 6
Counting challenges:
● Forward and reverse count in tens, hundreds and thousands
from any whole number to up to ten thousand
● Count on and back through zero in 2s, 5s and 10s starting at
random numbers
● Count on and back in 6s, 7s, 8s and 9s
● Count on and back in steps of 0.1, 0.2, 0.25 and 0.5
Suggested activities:
● How long does it take you to say your 6, 7, 8 or 9 times tables? How
much faster are you at some than others?
● Number lines and counting sticks held horizontally and vertically to
illustrate temperature, weight, rainfall etc
● Range of activities to select different starting points to begin counting
using dice, cards, feely bag e.g:-
count back in 2s from 11
count on in 10s from -54
● Order numbers relating to counting in whole numbers and decimals e.g.
-2.25, 1.75, -1.50, -2.50, 1.25, 2.00
-55, -40, -50, 35, -45, 15, 20, 60
● Ball catch around the class for different counts
● Pass the clap around the circle for different counts
● Use calculators to illustrate counting in different steps-forwards and
backwards. Interpret the display correctly in terms of context e.g.
what does 1.26 mean when measuring in metres?
● Counting choir:-
Children in different counting groups…teacher to choose groups to
continue the count e.g.
● ‘Jeopardy’ e.g. the answer is 36 so what is the multiplication question?
● ‘Headbands’ child must ascertain their number by asking questions e.g
am I a multiple of
