(No) Need for Speed

Sloths mostly eat leaves that do not give them a lot of energy. So these animals are very slow-moving and can spend hours hanging from a branching without any movement. They move climb trees at 6-8 ft per minute and move on ground at maximum of 3 ft per minute! Even their digestive system is very slow. Some food items take a whole month to digest. Their slow metabolism also helps sloths survive falls from high branches that would kill off most animals.

Who Needs a Bath?

Sloths have grooved hair on their body which is the perfect breeding ground for algae. But, even though we may cringe at the thought, the sloth sees the algae more as a bit of a nibble than dirt. So, who needs a bath when you have snack growing on your body? The greening algae also provide the sloths with the perfect camouflage against predators. Their fur is curved from the belly towards the back to drain off rainwater as they hang from branches.

… But I don’t mind a swim!

While a sloth is very slow on the ground, it is a powerful swimmer. Sometimes a sloth may drop into a river from the tree and cross it with confident breaststrokes!

Meet The Claw of Doom!

Sloths have really powerful claws that grip the branches of the tree like a safety hook. In fact, their grip is so strong sometimes a sloth remains hanging from a branch even after it dies!

The Toe of Distinction

Now there are two families of sloths: the Two Toed and the Three Toed. The two toed sloths move faster. But three toed sloths have an extra neck vertebra which allows them to rotate their heads 270 degrees.

The Sloth Diet

Sloths usually eat leaves and an occasional fruit if it chances upon one. Due this low calorie, low nutrition diet the sloth has only about 25 percent muscle mass compared to mammals its size. This helps them hang from the trees longer.

Sleepyheads of the Jungle

Sloths’ ‘green diet’ gives them very little energy. Running away from danger drains a lot of their energy. That’s why sloths spend from 15 to 18 hours a day sleeping.

Once upon a time in a land far away called Dominos, there were 2 children called Jack and Rose. Jack and Rose ,who were really poor, took a stroll to the scrap yard for jack to meet his friend Tim and Rose to meet Tim’s sister Becky. They played different games and at the end they played tag. It was Tims turn to chase everyone. Jack ran and ran but tripped on a rock and went through an invisible portal and ended up in a mysterious forest. As soon as jack entered everything was silent ,but as the leaves rustled a hooded figure appeared……

Yes it is I thought.I tried to tell her that I was here, but I couldn’t move my mouth.

Then I felt something warm around my waist.
I was getting softer.Oh my gosh. Was it rose?
What is happening?
Suddenly I could move again!
I was back to normal
Then I turned around.”rose!” I screamed

“Let’s go!” yelled rose.

We both ran really quickly out of the tunnel and home.
When we went through the house door our mother was putting our PJS out.
As I climbed into bed I got scared because It looked like the trees were walking closer to me.Later that evening I woke up from a horrorfiying dream.I looked at the end of my bed. There was the same black figure from the forest!!!!

The creature at the end of the tunnel!!!!

As I came to the end of the tunnel I could see a forest. The trees were domanaiting witch made the forest dark.As I wondered around the forest I suddenly heard some tense footsteps. They were coming closerThat made my walk faster then I broke into a sudden run.My heart was thumpng as fast as a cheetah.
I stopped running.
Why had the footsteps stops?
what was behind me?

I turned around.I saw a mysterious black figure.
It came closer. Then I saw that the figure was green!!!
I thought.What was it?
It was a gremlin!!!
I took a couple of steps back. Then I turned around and ran for my life!!

Suddenly I noticed that I couldn’t move!
what happened?
why can’t I move?
I heard a voice.

It screeched “I have turned you into rock hard stone!you will never leave this forest!ever!

I felt a shiver go down the back of my spine.
Just when all hopes were lost I thought I could smell the perfume that rose was wearing this morning……..

Art in year 6

In year 6 we were leaf rubbing. We got white paper and put the leaves underneath and used pastels to colour so we could see the leaf coloured through the paper.

Anti bullying!

This Friday we learnt about bullying and how hard it is for people around the world. Bullying should not happen! I hope that bullies everywhere are aware of what harm and sadness they bring to people that get bullied!

100 Word Challenge week 13

Here in the UK we definitely have a late autumn with golden coloured leaves finally falling from the trees. They are making wonderful carpets for us to walk on or ‘scuff’ along in! I am using this for your writing this week. Please make sure you use the prompt as it is written. The prompt this week is:

…but as the leaves rustled…
